Language and Interpreter Services

Professional interpreters should be used to communicate with people with limited English comprehension and speaking capacity in all situations concerning their medical condition and/or treatment.

Information Needed Prior to Referral:

  • Patient Details:
    • Full Name
    • Correct MRN
    • Gender
    • Language / Dialect
  • Your Details:
    • Name
    • Clinic/Dept/Specialty
    • Contact Number

How to work effectively with an interpreter:

  • Establish information required prior to appointment / meeting
  • Confirm whether patient has a preference of gender for the interpreter
  • Confirm language / dialect required
  • Book interpreter a minimum of 24hrs prior when possible
  • Make sure you, and any other necessary staff, are available when the interpreter arrives (time is money!)
  • Speak clearly and do not shout
  • Allow time for the message to be interpreted between segments of information
